· Every year one Study Tour for S.Y. and two Study Tours for T.Y. are arranged.

· Film Shows: One science documentary Film per month is screened by the department of Biotechnology for the students of seven participating departments under “Star College Scheme”.

· Faculty visit: 15 faculty members participated in “Joint Workshop on Advanced Microscopy and Sophisticated Instrumentation” conducted at SP Pune University, on 11-12 April, 2015.

· Inter-Departmental Cooperative Schemes Implemented

1. Organized Refresher course in Life Science-Academic staff college, SPPU, Pune. (23th Sept to 14th Oct 2011).

2. Organized various Inter-departmental Workshops/Seminars for Life Sciences department students, viz. ‘Codonics’, ‘Perception: Nano Biotechnology’, ‘Techniques in Molecular Biology and Immunology’, ‘Soft Skill Development: Facing an Interview’, ‘Bioinformatics’, Graduation, Calibration and Glassware safety etc.

3. Interdepartmental activities like practical modules, projects, workshops, seminars, institutional visits were organized for seven departments (Biotechnology, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Electronics, Chemistry) under ‘Star College Scheme’ sanctioned by Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

34 . Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension Activities

· Organized Science Exhibition on the occasion of ‘Science day’ to create awareness about current developments and applications in the field of science. Secondary school and college students of all departments, as well as parents are invited to visit and gain information from models, charts, posters exhibited by UG and PG students

· Students visits ‘Friends of Tribal Society- Ekal Vidyalaya’ and distributes stationary

· Dr. S.N. Patil has adopted 10 students from ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’ and Financially supports their education

· M.B. Adke teaches English speaking and crafts to underprivileged students of Devlali cantolment school.

· M.B. Adke was vice-president of Mahila MH of Human Rights organization

· The faculty rountainly demonstrates Genetic Engineering and Plant and Animal tissue Culture Laboratory to school and college students

35 . SWOC analysis of the department and Future Plans:

Ø Strengths

· The faculty members of the department are qualified, dedicated and inclined towards research.

· Well equipped laboratories with state of art infrastructure.

· Admission for UG and PG on the basis of merit.

· The department strives to stress and encourage interdepartmental activities considering the interdisciplinary nature of the subject since its inception. Various co curricular & extra-curricular activities regularly organized in this context.

· The department has taken efforts to generate funds of 80 lakhs to get the ‘Star College Scheme’ sanctioned by Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and has been active in executing the various activities under this scheme (The only College to be granted this scheme in the Nashik).

· Single PG department of Biotechnology in Nashik district.

Ø Weaknesses

· Funding for major projects has not yet been availed

Ø Opportunities

· To get recognition as Research Centre.

· To develop more linkages & collaborations with industries and research institutes

Ø Challenges

  • 100% placement of post graduate students is not yet being done.
  • Possible decrease in student strength due to difficulty in placement.

· To get major research projects providing opportunities for PG students to work as research student.

Ø Future Plans

· To publish PG research projects in the form of departmental research bulletin to sensitize UG students towards research.

· To generate research grants through contract research in collaboration with industry.

· To conduct certificate courses for students of life sciences related with basic Biotechnology aspects
